OVERVIEW: 

Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC) is part of an academic health system in Providence, Rhode Island and home to one of New England’s oldest and well-established surgical oncology programs.  RWMC is a major teaching affiliate of Boston University.  We are currently seeking a fifth Surgical Oncologist to join our surgical team. 

 

DESCRIPTION: 

RWMC is part of an integrated health care system providing care to people in Rhode Island and surrounding states (CT, MA, and NH).  The system includes two hospitals and an independent physician association (IPA) comprised of a large number of primary care practices and specialists.  This is a vibrant and busy teaching-hospital with no trauma program affiliation. 

 

For over 70 years, RWMC has been recognized for both clinical and research cancer programs. It is designated as an Academic Comprehensive Community Cancer Center with ACS Committee on Cancer Commendation for the last three cycles of review.  RWMC was one of the first few NCI designated cancer centers in the country.  Some of the early Oncology Innovations, such as chrono-modulated chemotherapy, were developed here.  The Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program is one of the first few to be created in the nation under the tutelage of Harold Wanebo MD.  The fellowship program also has the distinction of being one of the first six programs to become ACGME accredited and has 100% pass rate on the Complex General Surgical Oncology Boards. The program provides enough opportunity and protected time for academic endeavors and conferences.  The Center for Outcomes and Quality for Surgery and Oncology (CQOSO), our outcomes research program; focuses on Geriatric Oncology and underrepresented populations.  Boston University and Boston Medical Center provide opportunities to teach and interact with their surgical residents and students.  The clinical faculty of Surgical Oncology have academic appointments at Boston University School of Medicine 

 

The mission of RWMC Division of Surgical Oncology is to provide up-to-date, excellent clinical cancer care; to educate medical students, residents and fellows; and to conduct clinical and basic research. Our highly trained surgical oncologist team offers the most current surgical treatment and techniques from complex open surgery to minimally invasive liver, pancreas, and esophageal procedures while providing personalized care.  The division collaborates in a multidisciplinary environment across multiple disciplines, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional oncology, advanced reference lab level pathology, experienced gastrointestinal oncology, and dermatology.   All Oncology Specialists work under one roof, which makes multidisciplinary care easily accessible and available for the patient and families.  The Clinical and Administrative Staff members are well trained to provide excellent care to the patients and accommodate their caregivers in the most challenging of situations.   

 

Providence is the state capital with easy access to other major cities like Boston and New York.  The City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island provide communities with a mix of history, collegiate, suburban living, nightlife, and fine dining.  The city is home to other renowned major universities; vast academic resources; a wide-ranging mix of entertainment and shopping; and easily accessible opportunities for sports and recreation for participants and fans alike.    Providence is a friendly northeastern city, with easy commutes and average cost of living relative to comparable metropolitan areas.  Rhode Island has a climate where all four seasons are enjoyed and has both indoor and outdoor activities to entertain all ages. 

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The successful applicant will join an established group of four experienced, fellowship trained, Surgical Oncologists with support from Surgical Oncology Fellows, Surgical Residents, and Physician Assistants.  The optimal candidate will have a strong interest and demonstrated ability to implement and continue to develop a modern HIPEC service line, and should have an interest in soft tissue malignancies inclusive of sarcoma and cutaneous cancers.  The optimal candidate should also have an interest in postgraduate education and either have the skills or be willing to acquire them to evolve into an associate program director of the fellowship program. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Board certified in General Surgery, Fellowship trained in Surgical Oncology with one to three years of previous clinical experience building a successful clinical practice preferred; however qualified new fellowship graduates will be considered 
  • Teaching experience with a clinical research background  
  • Qualify for academic appointment at Boston University 

 

RESPONSIBILITES: 

  • Complement and expand existing programs treating sarcoma, skin cancer, and HIPEC.  There is an existing Sarcoma and Skin Cancer Program.  The candidate will focus on expanding clinical and research-based programs.   
  • The RWMC HIPEC Program serves a population of 1.2 million people within Rhode Island and also southern Massachusetts.  The HIPEC program has existed at RWMC for over 25 years with RWMC being one of the first to utilize this modality; however the successful candidate will have specific interest in continuing and further growing this oncologic domain.    
  • Teaching Surgical Oncology Fellows, Surgery Residents, and Medical Students. 
  • General Surgery call coverage is required with call responsibility limited to the primary hospital and without trauma coverage, approximately 4-nights/month.
