Company History

Memorial Hospital
Opened in 1952, Memorial Hospital is the result of efforts by a group of Chattanooga citizens in the late 1940s to build a private, nonprofit hospital to alleviate a shortage of hospital beds and ensure healthcare excellence in the community. Under the leadership of H. Clay Evans Johnson, the Hamilton County Memorial Hospital Association conducted one of the largest fundraising campaigns in Chattanooga history to collect the $3 million needed to build and equip the new hospital.

The necessity of having someone to operate the new hospital focused attention on the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The Sisters eagerly accepted the challenge and operated the hospital from its opening in 1952 until 1997 when Memorial became a part of Catholic Health Initiatives.

At the time of its opening, Memorial Hospital had 180 beds and 35 bassinets. With improvements and expansions of its services and facilities through the years, Memorial is now licensed for 322 licensed beds and offers a broad range of medical, surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Memorial North Park Hospital
Memorial North Park Hospital's history dates back to 1939 with the start of the Earl Campbell clinic. The present location was opened on November 15, 1982 as an acute care facility called North Park Hospital. In 1990, the four-story Physician's Office Building was added to the hospital and a year later, North Park Hospital was converted to a not-for-profit healthcare facility. In February 1998, North Park Hospital was acquired by Memorial Health Care System. Through its alliance with Memorial Health Care System, Memorial North Park Hospital gained a new mission to provide quality, faith-based care for residents north of the river beginning with the construction of the "Christ the Healer" chapel. Memorial North Park Hospital is licensed for 83 beds and offers many specialized outpatient and inpatient services.

Since it's acquisition by Memorial Health Care System, Memorial North Park Hospital has added many services. The hospital was the first healthcare facility in Chattanooga to offer open MRI services and the 16 slice CT scanner. Memorial North Park was also the first hospital north of the river to offer a Cardiac Rehab program and a Center for Cancer Support. Other additions include the Plaza Building which houses physician's offices, the Sleep Center, an enlarged Imaging Center, and an Endoscopy Center. In June 2006, Memorial North Park Hospital was honored to be recognized as having the highest patient satisfaction rating of all facilities within Catholic Health Initiatives.

Memorial Health Care System
In addition to Memorial Hospital and Memorial North Park Hospital, Memorial Health Care System includes Memorial Atrium Imaging Center, Memorial Center for Health, Memorial Health Place at Hamilton Place, Memorial Health Place at Hixson, Memorial Home Health, Memorial North Shore Health Center, and Memorial Westside Health Center.
